“Our biggest problem may not be what we are seeing, but what we are seeing through.”
One day, I was in deep conversation with a friend discussing some situations that were going on around us. As we carried on our conversation, replaying the events that had taken place, a moment of understanding erupted. He said, “Sometimes, it’s not what you see but what you’re seeing through.” Wow! That is a very profound statement! From that moment, I could clearly see the matter in a totally different light.
Trauma and drama, cultural dysfunction, and personal convictions are some of the lenses through which we view life. For example; sometimes, people who have failed relationships struggle to be successful in new relationships, simply because they are seeing through the lens of the previous one. The negative events in our lives can be viewed as smudges on the lens of truth. The truth is that we have not been called to pain, abuse, inferiority, and fear. No. We have been called to victory!

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33 KJV)
Friends, we expect that life will throw us many curveballs. Sometimes, we can barely catch our breath from one blow before even more trouble comes knocking at our door. In those moments, we have a critical choice to make. We can look at our condition through the lens of defeat and fear, or we can choose to view life through the lens of the Word of God and have peace. We have to remind ourselves to use the Word of God as a cleansing cloth to wipe away the smudges of deceit.
Numbers Chapter 13 shows us what happened to the children of Israel when they were only across the river from their land of promise. They had come so very far, but could not enter because their “lenses” were covered over with doubt and fear. They had encountered difficult circumstances during their journey but were never abandoned by God. Even with all that the Father had done in freeing them and providing for them, they were unable to focus on the omnipotent power of God to do what He promised.
And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Numbers 13:33 KJV)
They spent too much time measuring themselves up to the size of the giants they were facing instead of measuring their giants up to the size of their God. For some, the real opposing enemy to achieving our goals and living our dreams is not how the giants see us but how we see ourselves.
If you find yourself repeating negative cycles, take a moment to check your lenses. Ask yourself, “What am I seeing through?” The smudges of life are sometimes bold, boisterous, and easily recognizable. However, some smudges are subtle and built over time, little by little. Be honest with yourself, and be honest with God. Ask the Father to help you see clearly.
Pray this Scripture (Ephesians 1:17-19 KJV) back to God and watch Him work on your behalf.
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.”

Very insightful Pastor Nancy. The Apostle Paul’s Prayer in Ephesians is a powerful one especially in the Amplified translation. Thanks for sharing!
Yes! I love that prayer and pray it for myself very often.
Yes! I pray it over myself very often.
I love this: “If you find yourself repeating negative cycles, take a moment to check your lenses.
