This is Part 3 in my 5 Part Mini Publishing Series. I thought I would share a little bit about traditional publishing. So here goes…
If you are a first time author or someone who is just building your tribe you should especially know that traditional publishing is probably not your best avenue.
Here are 6 reasons why traditional publishing DOES NOT WORK for most people:
1. Most of the time traditional publishers don’t take authors seriously unless they have an agent. And getting an agent….Well, that’s a whole other subject for another day!
2. Traditional publishers normally require authors to purchase a set quantity of books but at a discounted rate. Did you get that? YOU pay them just so you can sell YOUR book!
3. Traditional publishers really ONLY produce and distribute your books into the market. The key thing you must understand is they don’t really market. This will always, I repeat always be the responsibility of the author. You will be your number one marketer. They will do little if any marketing at all.
4. Traditional publishers not only own the rights to your book but they have full control over it. This means you probably won’t have the final say on the cover design, title and any “special” features that you wanted included in the book.
5. Your royalty rates will be extremely low averaging between 7 – 10% and sometimes up to 25% on the high end which is very rare.
6. Traditional publishers take way too long to get your book published. It could actually take anywhere from 1 – 3 years for completion.
