Vision is important, but clear vision is imperative in our natural and spiritual life. When our vision is not clear in the natural, we see things in a blurry way and this affects how those things appear. This also applies to our spiritual sight. If we cannot see clearly in the spirit,

our spiritual eyes will be tainted by the natural things we see, by our thoughts, and by our heart. Proverbs 29:18a declares, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” If we, the people, do not have a vision for our lives, we will perish. We will live our lives in limbo, waiting for things to happen for us when we are supposed to have a vision and work towards fulfilling our vision every day.

Our natural vision and our spiritual vision will collide and work together if we open ourselves up and allow God to “work all things together for our good” (Romans 8:28). There are many times when we cannot see in the natural what is going on in our lives, and we feel as if there are more things and people working against us than there are working for us. If we would trust the Spirit of God to reveal God’s plan for our lives in seasons where we cannot see clearly, we will live a life of peace and joy no matter what is going on around us. When we can’t see clearly, the fear of not knowing comes upon us; but God does not want us to be fearful of the unknown. This is why He has equipped us with spiritual sight.

There is a passage of Scripture in the Bible from 2 Kings 6 where one of the servants of the man of God became fearful because of what he saw around him in the natural—but God opened His vision in the spirit and allowed him to see the help that was around him and the man of God. Elisha was the prophet who received a double portion of the Prophet Elijah’s anointing. He was a mighty man of God. At this time, the king of Syria decided he wanted to war against the king of Israel. God began to deal with Elisha by speaking to him concerning the king of Israel. Elisha sent the word to the king of Israel saying, “…Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down(2 Kings 6:9b). When we have clear vision in the spirit, we are able to be in tune with the Spirit whenever God is ready to release a word to someone.

The king of Syria became so upset because he could not find the king of Israel. He went as far as to think that one of his servants was telling the king of Israel his plans. He said to his servants, “Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?(2 Kings 6:11b) His servants told him, (paraphrasing) “We are not the ones that are telling the king of Israel what you plan to do to him, but it is the Prophet Elisha who is telling the king your business.” What I like about this is that the servant said in 2 Kings 6:12b, “O king:  but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.” The only way God could have revealed to Elisha what the Syrian king was plotting is by Elisha having a clear passage to God through the Spirit. We cannot allow the circumstances in life to cloud our focus and our vision. It is Satan’s job to distract us so we cannot be effective in our gifts, calling, and purpose on earth. In order for us to fulfill the vision and purpose for our lives, we have to have clear vision.

The Syrian king sent spies to find out where Elisha was, so the spies told him he was in Dothan. The king could not wait to send a great host of his army with horses and chariots to capture Elisha. He thought, if he could capture and kill Elisha, there would be no one else to tell the king of Israel about the plot against him.

The great army surrounded the city of Dothan, and when Elisha’s servant woke up the next morning, he saw all the horses, chariots, and the great army that was sent to capture them. Elisha’s servant was afraid because of what he saw with his natural sight. Things happen in our lives and we make those things out to be bigger than what they really are. When we are going through situations and issues in life, we sometimes forget that “If God be for us, who can be against us.” (Romans 8:31) Elisha had to remind his servant to not be afraid at what he saw with his natural eyes. Elisha told his servant, (paraphrasing) “Do you not know whose we are? We are the children of the most High God and He will always fight for us. Servant, you cannot see who is with us with your natural eyes, so I am going to pray to our Father that He will show you who is for us.” 2 Kings 6:16-17 says it this way: “And he answered, ‘Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with him.’ And Elisha prayed, and said, ‘LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see.’ And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.” God wants us to see that He is with us at all times.

Clear vision will cause us to stand as giants in the face of our enemies. Clear vision will cause us to be focused and determined in all that we do. Clear vision will encourage us to keep moving forward and leave the past behind. Clear vision will cause us to see beyond the natural into a realm of the spirit that will cause us to soar like eagles. When we begin to see in the realm of the spirit, we are able to live a spirit-filled life. I am not saying that seeing in the spirit will make everything easier in our lives. I am saying that seeing in the spirit will cause us to be confident in the God we serve and to “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

I pray that the eyes of our understanding will be enlightened so we are able to know who is for us. I pray that “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.” (Ephesians 1:18-19)
