God’s purpose for our lives has the capacity to heal others. Through God’s grace, our story of obedience can change our families, communities, and even the world we live in. Our life is not just for us. We all have a unique purpose while on earth…yes, all of us. What if God wanted to do something powerful with your life but you don’t even know it, because you are skeptical and full of unbelief?

How can we expect to fully understand our purpose if we rarely seek God’s counsel first?

James 1:5-8 NIV

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

When you doubt God, you are basically saying that you don’t trust Him and His Word enough. This thinking leads to a road of trouble and heartbreak. A life without God’s guidance and instruction is filled with confusion. While it may appear like we have it all together, we are limiting God’s power…just by doubting.

Scripture says, “…when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” Whew! It then says that person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Gasp! That in itself gets my attention and shakes me up each time I read it. When we have doubts and we don’t seek to change that thinking, we are blocking God’s wisdom. That may seem harsh but it’s the truth. God deeply desires for us to trust Him in all situations, every single day, not just the days when it all lines up. When we are unstable in our faith, it is impossible to receive a clear picture of the purpose God has for us.

When we lack a clear purpose, we are all over the place. Sometimes, it’s subtle; other times, it’s very obvious. We dive into a million things at once, and we think that this is how you do it. Do it all! Go Big or Go Home! Now, don’t get me wrong. You need to be confident in all that you do. But seek God first. When we lack wisdom, knowledge, or direction, we should ask. That is what God desires from His people. He didn’t send His son Jesus to die for us, so we could live a life that looks nothing like the mission of Christ.

What would our lives look like if we started intentionally seeking God’s distinct purpose? What if, after we seek God’s wisdom, we quickly acted on what we were instructed to do, instead of doubting it; or worse…running away?  My answer is simple. God would be pleased…and that is the ultimate prize. The Father’s love and pride…because we chose to seek Him and sat still, long enough to listen and finally obey His instructions.

God is certain to give wisdom, but we must be ready to proceed accordingly with no delay, no hesitation, and no doubt.

  1. Tenia, this was short but PROFOUND. I believe, this right here, “When we lack a clear purpose, we are all over the place. Sometimes, it’s subtle; other times, it’s very obvious. We dive into a million things at once, and we think that this is how you do it. Do it all! Go Big or Go Home!” speaks volumes to what many people in our culture are dealing with.

There are way too many distractions and as a result, people are not walking in their purpose.

    THANK YOU!

    1. Thank you so much Coach Kish:) This has been an area that God keeps bringing to my mind, for me. I am glad to be able to share.

  2. “He didn’t send His son Jesus to die for us, so we could live a life that looks nothing like the mission of Christ.” This line really struck a chord with me. The promise was fulfilled and we have the benefit of His complete sacrifice. What a great thought to continue to reflect on.

  3. I love it when you say “When we lack clear purpose, we are all over the place.” This is so true. We’re just existing and not living. I love this blog.

  4. Thanks for this amazing post, Tenia. It’s true that when we doubt God, we become stressed, confused, and troubled. We simply have to let go and let God!

  5. No Words need but I ask for us all to remain in a state of hope and expectancy with our very souls In our Father’s surety and steadfastness which takes us behind the veil into His very presence. In the name of Jesus I humbly ask and rejoice in knowing our prayers are answered. It’s done and we readily receive!

  6. What would our lives look like if we started intentionally seeking God’s distinct purpose?

That statement right there is enough to set the tone for the new year! Thank you so much Tenia for this timely word!

  7. Tenia, thank you for your wise words! This phrase particularly resonated with me: “What if God wanted to do something powerful with your life but you don’t even know it, because you are skeptical and full of unbelief?” So often we get in the way of God working in our lives because we feel like we’ve “got this,” when in fact, we don’t have anything! As we sail into the new year, your words are a timely reminder to seek His purpose and stop trying to “run the show.”
