Book Publishing & Soul Development

The holiday season is at our doorstep. Even in the midst of the old year wrapping up, everyone continues to seek solace within their souls with thoughts of eating, drinking, and maintaining what is true to their understanding. Our hearts have grown cold to the calling and beckoning of the Holy Spirit. The desire to be drawn nearer to God is a far and distant thought as the seasonal pressure to cave in to the desires of the flesh overwhelms our environment.

Thinking back to this time last year when we heard, by our preferred means of communication, yet another empowering message that tickled our thoughts, we are once again determined that this year would be different. This time, we wanted to make a permanent change.

That was my personal circumstance before I decided to turn off convenient distractions and lock myself indoors for a three-day-weekend. I unplugged my phone, turned all digital devices on mute, allowed all messages to wait in voicemail, and opened my thoughts to seek the heart of our Father in heaven.

Just before I closed the bedroom door, I had heard these lyrics on Moody’s radio station, “I miss my time with you, our moments together…” I so desired to confront the spiritual undercurrents operating through my life, and Ephesians 4:17 returned to remind me of my focus: “So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.”

Fasting, praying, and seeking biblical truths to answer the basic issues of your day seems like an overkill.  Yet continuing to take in and absorb the wisdom of the world keeps our mind in a state of constant confusion. Spiritual chaos reigns through our day-to-day activities, while the solutions to our most difficult tasks rested in the seeking of Scriptures, day and night, for a permanent alignment plan. I read through Ephesians and Philippians, in hopes of somehow making those words relate to me and my current struggles.

Even though I’ve since transitioned through various versions of the same Scriptures, I started to recognize a shift in the pace of my thinking. My mind was slowing down. I was starting to find comfort and ease as I allowed the written Word to make an impression on my thoughts and realign my spirit with His Spirit. My mind was no longer racing…what my work environment loves to label as “fast-paced thinking.”  I was now encountering a unique perspective of my life from the lover of my soul—Jesus.

Setting aside time to seek and search the Scriptures was a sacred season for me.  I envisioned with a heart of expectancy.  Even when I faced situations or circumstances that attempted to sabotage my acceleration, I endeavored to address the challenges with a technique crafted from the Bible.

So continue to fortify your soul through fasting and praying! It will awaken you to the spiritual undercurrent, and will help you to understand your direction in addition to illuminating your path.

  3. Love this post! We are reminded to seek biblical truths and pray for us to unearth our “spiritual undercurrent”-I love this phrase too!

  4. Thank you Nicole for this timely reminder! Indeed, it is important for us to create time for growing our intimacy with God through fasting, praying and reading His word.

  5. Your words never fail to make me think. As we are coming to the end of a year that has been difficult on so many levels, I am grateful for your timely reminder to seek Him, and to take the time to “unplug” and listen for His voice. Our world has become increasingly louder, and if we are not intentional about turning down the noise and seeking His will, we find ourselves lost in the clamor.
