Do you remember the Grammy Award Winning song sung by James Ingram and Linda Ronstadt entitled “Somewhere Out There?” A pretty cool song in my opinion.
That “out there” part though is something that is an enigma to the novice author but a platform to the successful author because they know where out there is and how to get to it.
As I continue with my series on Offline Marketing Strategies, partially derived from my experiences with my Business Coach Lisa Nichols, I want you to pause to think about these questions and see what you come up with?
- When it comes to getting your book out there define, “out there”. Where exactly does your book need to go?
- Who does your book need to reach? “And you betta’ not say everyone either!” (In my Big Mama voice.)
- How should your book get out there?
If you are vague or unclear in answering the above questions, you will have difficulty when it comes to marketing your book.
Now, you may not believe this, but word of mouth is still the best type of marketing. It’s when one person tells another and then those two tell two more and those four tell two more and those six tell…you get the point.
So, if you want to get your book “out there” and you would like a formula for it, here it is:
[box type=”shadow”]START HERE if you are accessing via EMAIL >>>[/box]
I call it the 1-F-L Strategy, I guess because it reminds me of the NFL where the superstar athletes make it to. It’s when you start with 1, start with FREE, and start with Local. Here’s a breakdown of how to implement 1FL:
- Who do you know that can benefit from your core message? Start rehearsing with them. This 1 over here – that 1 over there. Find your 1s!
- What free information can you provide to them that would bring so much value until they’d think they should have paid for it?
- Once you can feel yourself getting clear and confident with your message and you’re producing results with the 1s, let’s get bold. Where can you book yourself locally and present this “free” information to more than 1 person at a time?
When you can walk through the 1FL steps you will gain the traction you need to get to where you want to be.
Many people don’t know this, but Coach Lisa got her start creating programs, resources and motivational tools for teens. She started with 1. She had her own son Jelani, whom she so often affectionately talks about all the time. She started with free. She was willing to spread her message for free. She started with local. She had access to the LA school system because she worked for a local school.
I remember when I first started out. I started helping a pastor arrange his sermons in book format. I started with 1. Then as people began to find out about my talent, I started helping others. Before I knew it, I began conducting local workshops. And here I am today. All because I started with 1. I started with free and I started locally.
So now, how do you develop the mindset to maximize each stage of the process, 1 – Free – Local?
1 – When you are telling your message to 1 person, don’t just look at them as 1 person because they represent dozens, hundreds, thousands, millions. All it takes is 1 person to hear your message and be inspired, set free and delivered to tell others and create mass exposure for your book.
Free – You should be booking yourself to speak for every opportunity that becomes available for you, and most of them will be work for free. When you think about giving of your time, talent and energy for free, don’t see it as free. When you think of free, I want you to think of it as an opportunity to learn, grow, sow and seed. Every time you allow yourself the opportunity to speak you are:
Learning to hone your voice and your message.
Growing because every time you move out of your comfort zone to tell your story, you are realizing what works and doesn’t work for you.
Sowing because you can’t cheat or get away from God’s system. He has established laws that govern the universe and surely as you sow your message, you will eventually reap a harvest. If you are sowing inspiration, information, motivation, encouragement to others, you are going to reap a harvest one day.
Seeding – I look at seeding a little different than sowing. When I think of sowing, I think of the seed actually taking root and producing fruit. When I think of seeding, I think of seeds being scattered everywhere and sometimes they may take root and sometimes they may not. It’s like the parable in the bible of the sower whose seed fell on the different types of ground. Sometimes you will have to just show up in life and get those seeds out there. Sometimes they will fall on good ground and sometimes they won’t. But the more seeds you sow, the more chances you have for them to take root and produce fruit.
Local – Local is good! I know you probably want an international platform RIGHT NOW and you feel you just can’t wait to see yourself as the headliner on those flyers for major conferences throughout the nation, but you’ve got to remember, you have bills to pay and mouths to feed. You can’t just quit your job to travel. So, you better start local. lol
Listen, these 1FL Strategies are great opportunities to maximize your message but if you are not careful, pride will get in the way and keep you from taking advantage of them. Be real with yourself and answer this question,
“What are you doing today to get the results you want with your book tomorrow?”
I hope my Offline Marketing Series is really adding to your knowledge bank. There is so much more I have to share but let me hear from you. Comment if they are being a blessing and go ahead, let me see the answer to that question.

Thank you! This was so helpful. I just signed up for Write it Now 2018. The webinar is awesome, but it the marketing is what I needed to have more insight on. This webinar focuses on mainly completing your book. So your teaching was very needed!
Thanks Again
